Labelled Tape Service
Managing backup tapes increasingly difficult
As the amount of data
you backup grows, the number of tapes required to back it up grows.
Compound this with new requirements for archiving emails and other
business correspondence, and it becomes obvious that hand written labels
are not practical for large numbers of tapes.
Custom barcode label your tapes
Establish a custom naming convention for your tapes. For example, we
could name the tape for the first Monday of the month for the Exchange
server “EPXMWk1#001”. This will avoid duplication of your Monday tape
names, and the problem of knowing which Monday tape you need. It also
alerts you to missing tapes, giving you added security and control.
Multiple Servers with Multiple Tape Drives
Most backup
operations default to Overwrite when an incorrect tape is used, and this
could mean the loss of important prior versions of files. Ordering your
tapes with your custom labels helps you keep multiple tape sets separate
from each other.
Tape Libraries
Every time
you open & close the door to your tape library, the firmware needs to be
updated to reflect any tapes you’ve changed. Each tape must be loaded
into the tape mechanism to accomplish this, so it can take over 30
minutes, depending on the number of tapes in the library.
Tape libraries equipped
with barcode scanners and tapes with barcode labels can update the
firmware in seconds, making your file restores much quicker.
